Neighborhood Living Guide

Overviewa grid older than the city

Life in Georgetown, DC

Federal and Georgian rowhouses step down toward the canal and the river, block after block, in a grid older than the city around it.

The retail spine on M Street and Wisconsin Avenue keeps the daytime busy and the university keeps it young, but a block above either street the noise falls away into gardens and quiet residential blocks that have been lived in for more than two centuries.

It is the oldest neighborhood in Washington and one of its most sought-after, a market of historic rowhouses and larger homes where demand is steady and inventory tends to stay limited.

Area measuredGeorgetown, four covering Census tracts, 1.2307778507857545 square miles of land
Area basisGeorgetown is not a Census place, so these figures cover the four Census tracts that hold 98.9% of it. Three of the four sit almost entirely inside Georgetown; the fourth is about two thirds inside, so the area described reaches a little past its northern edge.
MediansMedians cannot be added together, so no median is shown for the combined area. Median household income runs from 135,708 to 159,583 across the four tracts. Median age runs from 19.8 to 56.6 across the four tracts.
Who is counted3,553 of the 11,036 residents counted here live in group quarters rather than in households, student housing being the usual reason, which is why the age profile leans young. Georgetown University's campus sits inside the boundary. The household figures below, tenure and household size among them, count only the 7,483 people who live in households.
